A Postcard from Ghana

Comic Relief hasn’t really been on my radar for the last few years.

I loved it when I was a kid – the anticipation every two years of finding out what the red nose was going to look like (my favourite remains the fluffy one), the daft fundraising events that people would do at school, the evening of television with all sorts of celebs being silly, all my favourite boybands doing novelty songs – but I have to admit that more recently Red Nose Day has passed by without me really noticing.

Not so this year. This year marks 25 years of Red Nose Day, and a great celebration of all the good work that has taken place since 1988.

As part of that celebration, three of my favourite bloggers – Mammasaurus, Mummy Barrow and Penny Alexander – known collectively as  Team Honk – have just been to Ghana, to visit some of the projects that are funded by Comic Relief. Along with Davina McCall and Jonathan Ross, they visited a bakery, a mental health project, a community project and a vaccination centre, all in the space of two days.

I can only imagine what an overwhelming experience it was –  shocking and saddening in parts, but inspiring, educational, and uplifting too. Team Honk have done an incredible job of sharing their experiences with the wider blogging community, and I can’t wait to see more of their posts about the visit over the coming weeks.

As part of the trip, they sent every interested blogger a ‘Postcard from Ghana’ – a unique image from the trip, along with some explanatory text, for us to share on our own blogs. I am so proud to share my postcard with you here.

Hello Ruth!

This morning we visited a vaccine project where babies and young children were receiving the rotavirus inoculation. This little girl had been weighed and measured and sat with her mother in a shady corridor waiting to take her turn.It was striking just how quiet the children were, presumably the heat zaps their energy – it was 93 degrees fahrenheit. I played peekaboo from behind my hands and she was staring very intently – I think she was trying to work me out!
